Broward B-cycle's 'Tour de Sandwich' takes Ft. Lauderdale
Which local restaurant would take home the title?
On Saturday, October 21st, bicycle riders from throughout Broward County joined the First Annual B-cycle 'Tour de Sandwich', a two-wheeled quest to find the tastiest sandwich Ft. Lauderdale has to offer.
Under sunny skies and mild temperatures, about a dozen riders of all ages met at the Holiday Park B-cycle station at 1 pm for the start of the tour, which would visit 4 local restaurants nominated by local B-cycle members and fans.
With their chains oiled and tires filled, the riders began the 8.5 mile route as it wove through tranquil Victoria Park before arriving at Tarpon Bend in downtown Ft. Lauderdale's Himarshee District.
Restaurants were chosen based on nominations that came to B-cycle via e-mail, twitter and an online survey. Each restaurant was allowed to choose their own sandwich to serve the hungry and eager group of bicycle riders. Tarpon Bend's choice of an italian-style sandwich on fresh foccia bread was an interesting choice given the restaurant's reputation for fresh fish. Nevertheless, the sandwich received solid ratings from the group and before long, it was time to head off to stop number two - Gran Forno Pronto on Las Olas Blvd.
After a casual cruise down the picturesque downtown Riverwalk, the group arrived at Gran Forno Pronto on Las Olas Boulevard, already bustling with activity due to the Las Olas Arts Festival. The chef chose to serve the award-winning Chicken Pesto sandwich, and it did not disappoint! The group was throughly impressed - not to mention gradually filling up - as they saddled back up and headed down Las Olas towards stop number three.
Just a few blocks down Las Olas, the small, 30 year old family-owned italian restaurant At's-A-Pizza welcomed the pedal pushers with a truly memorable sandwich - the Sloppy Italian. Piled high with italian meats, cole slaw, mushrooms and broccoli rabe, the sandwich won rave reviews and would prove difficult to beat.
After a leisurely tour down Las Olas and up Ft. Lauderdale Beach, the bicycles parked in front of local beachfront institution Primanti Brothers. Well-known for their generously-stacked sandwiches piled high with french fries, the riders had enough energy and appetite remaining to order the pastrami and provolone sandwich. The soft, fresh bread combined with steaming hot pastrami and cheese was the perfect ending to the Tour de Sandwich, before ending the ride back at the Holiday Park B-cycle station.
Once all the dust settled after an intense deliberation, the pelton reached a consensus on the awards:
"Finest Sandwich" - Gran Forno Pronto (Chicken Pesto Panini)
"Best-Built" - Primanti Brothers (Pastrami & Provolone)
"Best All Around" Winner Tour de Sandwich - At's-A-Pizza (The Sloppy Italian)
Congratulations to our winners and a big B-cycle 'Thank You' for all being bicycle-friendly businesses.
